Concept

Titled ‘Rahang’, our design composition for a copper block base mainly focuses on millennials as our target market in the current batik industry. Our design features a unique fusion of architectural elements and inspiration based on architectural precedents.

An issue that we observed as we studied more about the public’s views on batik and the market is the misconceptualization of batik as a more traditional type of art that features complicated, organic patterns rather than batik as a technique, we wanted to contrast this misconceptualization and show that batik can be modern, batik can be angular and batik can be bold whilst utilizing the same technique. Our design’s goal is to highlight that boldness, that angularity and that modern style that can stand out in the current market.

Focusing more on the design itself, our pattern displays more on the beauty of angularity and minimalism. This is all a key part focused in the design while playing around with the illusion of depth as well. Mainly inspired by the design of Malaysian roofs, my partner and I was inspired to create the pattern in a square with clear distinctions of the four corners representing the pillars of support and strength. This symbolization of strength and support displays and carries the type of strengths millennials can offer as the future generation of Malaysia.

Next, the angularity of the design itself, this was mainly inspired as my partner and I studied more about the spirit and heart of Malaysians and more specifically Malaysian millennials. Based on a study, millennials are more community-oriented and they are more commonly known to have their core values based on their civic duty as Malaysians. Through this, we were extremely inspired to show the passion of the millennials through our national symbol, the Malayan Tiger. Studying more on the way a tiger’s jaw opens up and roars, our design features that angularity in a more abstract manner to represent the Malaysian millennials’ passion and heart.

Another key aspect of the design is also the intersecting lines from point to point creating a focal point in the middle of the design. We wanted the design to pop out through the intersecting of the lines symbolizing the core of the Malaysian millennials.

Finally, we also focused on the balance of the pattern in and of itself. We made sure to focus on maintaining a symmetrical balance to mainly act as a symbolization of how millennials are also a reflection of the past and the bridge to the future. Through these, we also wanted to display a sense of depth and volume through the overlapping of the X and the square, creating a feeling of protuberance in the design itself.
